I Don't Have Enough Time/Space to be Organised

Updated on August 6, 2013

I Was Messy

I used to like chaos. I felt very comfortable when I entered the room and find some clean space to sit and work something surrounded by clutter. And i thought that this is a great way to live. But then, one day the friend of mine, found out this blog post.

I started reading and I found out that I can try it myself. I wanted to do things in the way I never did it before. I read so many blogs about homemaking, and even started my own blog on this topic. I really understood how great it is to be organized, to live in decluttered and simplified environment. I felt great, and I wanted to make all my friends and family do the same. But, as you can imagine, it wasn't easy. Most of the people had so many excuses not to live like that. How can that be? People didn't want to do something that is good for them, and can even be fun.

I Still Have Messy Friends

I was surprised to find out how hard it is for someone to try and improve their own homes. In my country, there is a saying that says: 'who wants to do something finds a solution, and who doesn't, finds an excuse'.

Some of the most popular excuses when it comes to decluttering are: 'I will need that some day' and 'it's a memory'. That's just stupid. It's just stuff. It really is. Sometimes it's very hard to understand that, but that is stuff! And it's purpose is to make your life better, not cluttered. If it doesn't improve your life today, it should go out.

Then I tried other methods. I was showing them lovely pictures of different organized spaces. And they were telling me things like: 'that women is a stay at home mum, and I have kids and full-time job, of course that her house looks better than mine'. Or 'that house is so big, and I live in this small apartment, of course I can't have place for everything'. And that's stupid too. If you don't have time, this means that you shouldn't waste it because you can't find something in your house. It's much better to use few minutes to determine where your keys should stay then spending half an hour every morning trying to find them. If you don't have much space, you can't afford to waste it on things you don't need or like. You are the one who needs the best possible organization and efficiency, not the lady that has that big house.

You are the one who should be organized, because you don't have enough time or space not to be.

It's Your Stuff and Your Life

So, this is about you! If you don't realize that you have a problem, you will never try to solve it. OK, you maybe don't have the huge problem, but there is always a place for improvement. Don't let the stuff take control over your life. It's your stuff and your life and not vice versa.

If you are feeling prepared to change something, than you are on the half way to the solution. If you aren't prepared at all, you should give it a try anyway. Why? Because you will feel great after doing that. After you put in order just one drawer of counter top, you will look at if for hours. You will be proud on yourself. So, if you feel depressed today, declutter something, use it as a therapy. It will give you a feeling of accomplishment and happiness.

If I talk to someone who feels like nothing in it's life is good, I always give them an advice to declutter just one drawer. Everything feels better after doing something useful for yourself. It's like going to the gym. It's hard to start, but you are always glad that you did.

When Should I Start?

You should start right now. You should stand up from your computer and look around yourself. You will maybe see some big closet or entire room that is cluttered, but you should resist the urge to clean it right now. Give yourself some training first. Find some smaller pile of papers, clothes or books. Look for some drawer that needs just a few touches to look great. Toss as much as you can. Donate anything you don't need, but someone else does (one more reason to feel good about yourself). And pick things wisely which you want to keep in your home. Those really have to deserve it. Put everything back in it's place. Try to think how you use it, where do you use it and how often you do that before you determine where it's place will be.

And after fifteen minutes just sit down. Don't overdo it. This is just a start. Look carefully what you have done. Feel free to be proud and enjoy. If you manage to feel peaceful while looking at the area that you have organized, you are on a great way to become truly organised person.

Happy decluttering!
