A Few Facts About Horror Movies

Horror movies are a movie genre that are trying to pull out some negative emotions such as viewer's primal fear. These movies often use supernatural phenomenons, creatures like vampires, witches, ghosts, werewolves etc, stuff that will make people scared. Horror movies aren't made for everyone. Some think that they are boring, uninteresting, some can't face their fears, or simply don't have the stomach for some scary scenes, but those who are fans of this genre find these movies very entertaining.

However, today, it is so damn hard to find a good horror, one that will really scare you, but also keep your attention. It's not enough just to put some vampires or something else. Good horror movie needs to have a very good screenplay.

Personally, I'm a big fan of horror movies. Some of these amazed me, some have disappointed me. I will try to present my top five horror movies in 2000s.

Silent Hill

Silent hill is a 2006 horror movie directed by Christophe Gans. It starts with a family, father, mother and adopted female child. This girl is sleepwalking, during which she is trying to get to Silent Hill. Of course, when she wakes up, she doesn't remember anything. Her father thinks that the solution is psychiatric care and drugs, but her mother thinks that the only way to solve this is to take the girl to Silent Hill.

During her research, she finds out that the Silent Hill is one of a few ghost towns in America, but she decides to take her daughter there anyway. During their trip to Silent Hill they get stopped by a policewoman, but unwilling to give up on their trip, Rose (mother) drives away and crashes. When she woke up, she found out that her daughter was missing, and that she needs to try and find her in Silent Hill.

Eventually she realized that the ghost stories aren't just stories and that this town is really haunted by its residents who have died in the fire that engulfed the whole town. Although she's really scared, she won't give up on her daughter, and during her quest she will find out that there is a reason for everything that is happening in Silent Hill, and she will have to face it to save her daughter.

Director of this movie announced in 2006 that sequel of Silent Hill is on the way, and it is going to be released in October 2012.

Insidious

Insidious came out in 2011 as an independent horror movie directed by James Wan, and starring Patric Willson and Rose Byrne.

The story revolves around a young married couple with three kids (boys). They have just moved in a new house, and started to unpack. Their son Dalton climbs on a ladders in the attic and falls down, but stays unharmed. However, the next day he is in a coma. His parents took him in the hospital but doctors simply can't give them any medical reason why he is in a coma.

Some time later the parents are trying to deal with this problem in their own way. Dalton's father is staying late on work, and his mother is at home all the time noticing that something is wrong with the house, like the house itself is haunted. She tries to tell her husband about this, but he doesn't believe her, until he also witnessed some strange things.

They moved out, but the problems didn't go away. In their desperation they hired a friend of Josh's (father) mother, who deals with paranormal activities. Eventually they find out that Dalton has the ability to astral project while sleeping, which means that he can leave his body and go anywhere. But, one day he went too far, and couldn't come back. He has been captured by a demon which wants to dwell in his body. The one thing that they didn't know is that Dalton inherited astral project ability from his father, who forgot this due bad experience, and that his father is the only one who can save him.

This movie will also have a sequel and it will be released in 2013.

Drag Me to Hell

Directed by Sam Raimi, Drag me to hell is a 2009 supernatural horror movie, starring Alison Lohman, Justin Long and Lorna Raver. This movie was very well received by the critics, and at the box offices.

The movie starts with a little Mexican boy, who was brought by his parents to a house owned by a medium Shaun San Dena, because he claims to hear voices of a monster. He stole from gypsies and they cursed him. The medium failed to save him.

Forty years later we meet Christine Brown, a young girl who is trying to succeed in banking business. The assistant manager position has just been opened and she desperately wants to get it, as one of her fellow worker. To accomplish this she needs to be tough on the customers so that the bank can profit. Sylvia Ganush is an elderly Gypsy woman who is about to lose her house due to her banking debt. She begged Christine to help her, but Christine denied, and even ashamed Sylvia. After work, Christine walks to her car, and notices something weird. She was just about to start the car, when she saw Sylvia sitting on the back seat. After a fight, Sylvia took a button from Christine's coat and cast a Lamia curse on her, which is the most powerful gypsy spell.

Unaware of what just happened, Christine don't pay much attention to that event. But, the next day, the Lamia spirit started to haunt her. She decides to go with her boyfriend to visit a seer. She finds out that she is cursed, and that she will be tortured in the next three days and, at the end, dragged to hell. The only one who can save her now is Shaun San Dena, the medium who failed to save that little boy forty years ago.

[Rec]

Unlike these three American horror movies, Rec is a 2007 Spanish horror, and it was filmed using shaky camerawork as a found footage movie, and personally my favorite.

The story begins with a television reporter Angela Vidal who covers a night shift in Barcelona's fire station for the television show "While You're asleep" . She spends a boring night with the firemen interviewing one by one hoping for some emergency call. That call came and she went with the fire crew to the scene from where the call came.

The call was made by an older woman from the building due to the screaming of her neighbor. Fireman went to check it out, and found a woman who attacked one of them and bite him. Suddenly, the whole building was quarantined by the special forces and no one was allowed to leave. The bitten man became a zombie like a woman that bite him and so on. No one knows what is really happening.

While trying to find a way out, Angela, her cameraman Pablo, and some other found a loft. In there they realized that it all began with a little girl Tristana Medeiros, who was possessed by devil. A priest kept her there trying to isolate a demonic virus from her blood to find a cure. However, it all went wrong, and the virus was unleashed.

Interesting thing about this movie is that the actors didn't know when they would be attacked, and didn't know when will they die to the very last day, and that is the reason why their reactions seemed much more real.

There are two sequels of Rec, and forth is going to be released in 2013. These is also an American version of this movie, but it's a pretty poor remake.

[Rec] 2

A very good sequel to Rec. This one was released in 2009. The same story and the same way of filming.

The story takes place just an hour after the first movie. A team of special forces are on a mission that they know nothing about. They only know what needs to be done, and that is to escort a doctor from the building, and that is it. As soon as they entered the building they where attacked by an angry humans, and one of them became like that after he was bitten.

Unaware of the situation, they claim from the doctor to explain the situation they are in. It turns out that the doctor is a priest whose mission is to find a sample of Tristana Mederios' blood and that no one will leave the building until the mission is accomplished. However the mission becomes complicated when some innocent teenagers find a way to enter the building unaware of terrible things that are happening in there.

The third part was released in March 2012, but it's the unworthy successor of two previous movies. Hopefully the forth one will be as good as the first two.
